Kav Temperley Shows You All His Devotion on Debut Album
It’s always a hard stretch to go out on your own and produce a solo record. There is no barriers between you and the people. No mates to rely on if you bum up the last chord leading into the chorus, and it is quite a vulnerable state, when it’s you and your acoustic guitar.
Best known as the frontman for Eskimo Joe, Kav Temperley in between projects decided to follow up on his solo EP from a few years ago and the result is All Your Devotion. Chatting to me from the Jam room, Temperley is unsure about how this album will be received.
Look, I have no idea, I have been sitting with this album completed in my back pocket since March and the thing that makes me feel really good about it is that i’ve done everything in my power to make it the vision of the record that I wanted to make. Everything from the songwriting to the recording to the mastering and the artwork, I’m just really proud about how it came out of the head and onto the paper. The rest as they say, is up to the gods.
From just one listen to All Your Devotion, you are able to hear the array of influences at play throughout the 12 tracks of the album. The opening of ‘High’ is reminiscent to the sixties era of Rock n’ Roll, which gave way to releases such as Pet Sounds and Deja Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
This harks back, to the main philosophy that was always at the forefront of Temperley’s mind throughout the creation of All Your Devotion.
Where do I even start? I listen to lots of music all the time, and I absolutely love it. There is some classic moments that stand out for me including Van Morrison’s ‘Moondance’ and T-Rex Electric Warrior, I also really love that album. All of these kind of early 70’s records have been an influence but in recent years Father John Misty has taken all of those aesthetics and has done things in his own way and made it really modern. I wanted to make a record that sounded like those 70’s records, but could be like Neil Young’s Harvest but if he had released it yesterday.
On this album, Kav Temperley has teamed up with Pip Norman and John Castle, who have worked alongside some of Australia’s finest in Troye Silvan, Vance Joy and Megan Washington. The album overall has a massive gleam to it, and you should definitely check it out
